He was notorious for taking on odd jobs and using pseudonyms in credit rolls to avoid contractual complications with his label, Epic Records – one famous example is “The Simpsons” episode “Stark Raving Dad” in 1991, which clearly features Jackson but gives credit to a nonexistent “John Jay Smith.” Jackson died in 2009, leaving his fortune and the rights to his music in the hands of his estate. AtGames, which helped create the Sega Genesis Mini, claimed outright that the exclusion was because of soundtrack licensing problems. The biggest red flag was presented when Sega released the Sega Genesis Mini in 2019, a little console containing 40 Genesis games – Sonic 3 was missing from the collection, and given its legendary status, it was a suspicious omission. Sonic 3 has seen many re-releases over the years, but that stopped abruptly after the Steam version in 2011. That made for two reliable sources confirming Jackson’s involvement, but they cited two very different reasons for his work going uncredited. He did not want to be associated with a product that devalued his music.” At the time, game consoles did not allow an optimal sound reproduction, and Michael found it frustrating. And if he is not credited for composing the music, it’s because he was not happy with the resulting sound coming out of the console. Fellow musician Brad Buxer assisted Jackson and had this to say in 2009: “Michael called me at the time for help on this project, and that’s what I did. The rumors started many years ago when observant listeners noticed the similarities between several songs in the soundtrack and the music of Jackson – specifically “Stranger in Moscow,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Jam.” In 2005, Roger Hector, the executive coordinator for the game, stated in an interview that “Jackson was originally brought in to compose all the music for the game, but at the very end, his work was dropped after his scandals became public.”īut it seems his work wasn’t dropped, just left uncredited. The game has been mysteriously absent from classic-game collections since 2011 and only finally resurfaced June 23 in Sonic Origins, which suspiciously replaced a handful of songs. There have been rumors for decades now that Michael Jackson played a part in composing the soundtrack for 1994’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its companion title Sonic & Knuckles.

We chose these two techniques because they are commonly used for analysis of textual data in other evaluative contexts ( 16– 18). To do so, we juxtaposed results from an unsupervised, probabilistic approach using correlated topic modeling (CTM) ( 13, 14) with results from a dictionary-driven analysis using proprietary software Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) ( 15). Given the economic and social benefits of a college degree and the increased demand for admissions to selective colleges and universities ( 7), the controversy surrounding the SAT is likely to persist. Proponents of standardized tests have argued that they enable universal and unbiased measures of academic aptitude and may have salutary effects on fairness in evaluation when used as universal screens ( 1– 4) critics have noted the large body of evidence indicating a strong correlation between SAT scores and socioeconomic background, with some having dubbed the SAT a “wealth test” ( 5, 6). For a century, admission officers have made use of scores on standardized tests (SAT in particular) to assess and compare applicants. The information selective colleges and universities (defined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as schools that deny admission to at least 20% of applicants) use when evaluating applicants has been a perennial ethical and policy concern in the United States. This analysis shows that essays encode similar information as the SAT and suggests that college admission protocols should attend to how social class is encoded in non-numerical components of applications. We found that essay content and style had stronger correlations to self-reported household income than did SAT scores and that essays explained much of the variance in SAT scores. We quantified essay content using correlated topic modeling and essay style using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count. We used a corpus of 240,000 admission essays submitted by 60,000 applicants to the University of California in November 2016 to measure relationships between the content of admission essays, self-reported household income, and SAT scores. There is substantial evidence of the relationship between household income and achievement on the standardized tests often required for college admissions, yet little comparable inquiry considers the essays typically required of applicants to selective U.S. the worksheets may be appropriate for middle school and high school students. Here, we will include the definitions of the most common flags as described in the official document. Most Common Flags in /proc/cpuinfoĪ CPU can have hundreds of features that vary from model to model. For detailed information about all flags, see arch/x86/include/asm/cpufeature.h. When you have some spare time, take a look at the /proc filesystem on your Linux system for other system information you can find, including /proc/loadavg, /proc/vmstat, and much more.In the rest of the article, we will explain what the most common of these flags mean. And since virtually all modern processors have a cache line size of 64 bytes, alignas isnt useful unless you know your compiler supports alignas (64). The virtual size seems to be always 48 bits. user1686 at 8:15 Seems I see a variety of physical sizes, like 36 bits, 40 bits, and 46 bits. I hope these Linux processor and memory commands have been helpful. James also, the standard only requires alignas to support up to 16 bytes, so any higher value wont be portable. See how the world moved from 8-bit CPUs to 16-bit to 32-bit and then to 64-bit CPUs. The katana was their primary weapon for battle and the wakizashi was used for close quarters combat. Samurai warriors typically carried two swords as part of their dress. What’s the difference between a katana and a wakizashi?.Use a fresh piece of rice paper to spread the oil evenly on the blade. Take the bottle of oil and apply a few drops along the length of the blade on each side. Do this until both sides of the blade have been polished and the powder completely removed. Take a fresh piece of rice paper and rub the powder over the blade to polish it. Take the powder ball and tap it lightly against the blade about every two inches or so along its length. Using a sheet of rice paper from the kit or a soft cotton cloth, remove any oil that is still on the blade from the previous maintenance. There are three steps: removing oil, polishing the blade and oiling the blade. You can purchase a traditional sword cleaning kit that will have everything you need. Having a regular cleaning routine in place is key to maintaining your katana. This is achieved by having the two parts of the blade cooling at different speeds during the forging process. A katana’s blade needs to have a harder edge for retention and a softer spine for flexibility. What is that wavy line running down my blade?Īlso known as the hamon, it’s the visual divide between the harder and softer metal of the blade. It comes in many shapes and designs from basic to highly ornamental. This is, basically, the handguard on a katana and it sits between the blade collar or habaki, which is at the top of the blade, and the handle or tsuka. Are you looking for a sword to use or just as a decorative item to wear or display? Once you decide to what purpose you will be using your sword, then, take a look at the different variety of designs and ornamentation that can be found and choose the one that fits your personality, style and budget. The first thing that needs to be taken into consideration is display versus functional. What should I look for when buying a katana?.This weapon was used for slashing and stabbing motions in combat not necessarily for blocking or clashing. The blade is sheathed in a scabbard, which is traditionally made of lacquered wood. The handle is long and traditionally wrapped in rayskin and then a "braid" of silk or cotton. It has a curved, single-edged blade that is slender and a square or circular guard. The katana is a Japanese sword used by Samurai, an aristocratic warrior class in feudal Japan. These katanas are truly inspired and unique with always evolving forging processes to create blades with blue Damascus steel, HellFyre Damascus and clay-tempered T10 high carbon steel, among others. Hand-forged by expert swordsmiths with generations of knowledge behind them, the Japanese katanas offers are beyond compare. Combat is simplistic of melee, ranged and eventual magic (or real-time), but it’s surprisingly satisfying. Kitaria Fables is a bit of a mash-up of games like the original Zelda series and Stardew Valley, but it only scratches the surface with both. Meeting up with the local sage, Nyan uncovers her magic potential, some quests for artefacts and a good old fashioned RPG-like adventure yarn.īut the adventuring is only part of the Kitaria Fables experience (developed by Twin Hearts and published by PQube) as she’ll be managing a farm, completing side quests, mixing with the locals and developing her bartering skills, selling off her produce, loot from her battles and then crafting new gear. However, the bad stuff that happened in Canoidera, the land that this takes place in, has kicked off – known as The Calamity. Cue some swings of the sword and FFVII victory fanfares, and Nyan has found a good vocation. They arrive in Paw Village to help the residents as some of the ‘wildlife’ on the fringes are starting to go bad and randomly attack people. They’re from the pure archetype gene pool, intent on saving the people and the lands through good old fashioned heroics and farming. She’s a soldier in the empire, accompanied by Kirby’s shadow, Macaron. Understandably, she’ll be referred to as Nyan). CHA-Ching.Take our hero Nyan (Nyanza Von Whiskers. A crazy difference in profit margin.ĭon’t stop there however because add in two onions to your oil and you can sell Onion Rings for 475 Paw Pennies each. Corn plants sell for 95 Paw Pennies while ooil sells for 250 Paw Pennies. We won’t list all the recipes here because this is a farming guide but you can easily turn 2x Corn into Oil to sell for more profit. Just head to the Eatery in Paw Village where you can start cooking up dishes to make huge profits. But if you want to take your Paw Pennies making to another level you can craft recipes to sell that are worth more than the crop itself. So now you know which crops are the most profitable. As the profit for pumpkins will be the best in the game. But it’s well worth the time and money investment for them. This next round of farming isn’t going to come cheap as each seed costs 100 Paw Pennies to start off with. And he’ll sell you some rare seeds including the Pumpkin seed. Once you do unlock him however he’ll be around every third day after 7 PM in Paw Village. Unfortunately you won’t be able to get them until later on in the game. Pumpkins as Starbucks has discovered is going to be your little gold mine. You’re probably better selling Corn in this case and saving some Paw Pennies for Pumpkins later on. But they’re knocked down a rank because they’re a little pricey to start off with. Technically Sunflowers are the best selling crop. Right now the list of crops are sorted via their profit margin, with Corn being the best and Tulips being only okay. You’ll be able to buy these seeds from Kiki at Paw Village. When they’re ready for harvest use your scythe and cut them down. So try not to get too excited starting off or you’re going to spend a lot of your day just watering them. You’ll need to tend to your crops by watering them everyday until they’re ready to harvest. Clear the land, till the soil, plant the seeds and water them. However, as you continue to progress in the storyline and complete quests for Kiki, you’ll unlock additional seed types.įor most veterans of farming games this is going to be very familiar for you. You’ll initially be limited on which crops you can plant. When you receive the quest, you can go to your farm (near your grandfather’s home in Paw Village). If you’re not there yet, you won’t be able to open the box with all your farming tools. To get started with farming, you’ll have to first receive the quest Farming Trial from Kiki. The screenshots showed chambers filled with bright lava and open areas shot through with glowing blue magic, yet the majority of the DLC is spent running around the same stone walls, surrounded by bottomless pits of nothingness that make up the Void. That doesn’t entirely make up for a rather underwhelming overall design, though. I shan’t spoil it for you, but needless to say it was a huge challenge that came with a massive sense of accomplishment, especially as it took about a dozen attempts. Each battle tested me more and more, with the eventual final boss proving to be one of the best in the entire series. I had a blast fighting these bosses, learning their attacks and dodging them, eventually getting into a flow that would soon be broken by a new stage in the fight, introducing new attacks that needed learning in order to make it through the fight alive. At the end of each wing lies a boss construct, and although they all essentially look the same, each offers an increasing challenge that uses Fury’s own Hollows against her. To be fair to it, Keepers of the Void does have a few memorable battles deep within its magical walls. I was playing with my endgame Fury from when I reviewed the game, but a lower level player will likely be completely outmatched. Only, unlike the main game where they would be visible and wouldn’t attack unless you got within range, the ones in Keepers of the Void often materialise out of nowhere, not really giving you any option but to fight them. What’s more, the red-eyed versions of enemies that were tougher and guarded special items are back. It felt incredibly unbalanced, which is disappointing in a game that always felt fair, even when it was at its toughest. At one point, in the final wing, I had to flee an area because I was surrounded by at least half a dozen creatures, one of which was tanklike in stature and one that could teleport and deal huge amounts of damage with each attack. While it does introduce different, tougher creatures as you go, a lot of the time the extra difficulty comes from the DLC throwing several enemies at you in one go. As you progress through each wing, the difficulty increases but not in a rewarding way. It would have been nicer to see truly new enemies, with different movements and attacks that would offer more of a challenge from each duel.ĭuels would be far more appreciated, if I’m honest. This will help you to quickly learn their attack patterns, though it doesn’t exactly excuse their rather uninspired design. There are new enemies patrolling the Void, though they are loosely based on existing creatures from the main game. The Flame Hollow moves platforms, while the Storm Hollow creates updrafts to reach higher levels or to glide over large chasms, though I’ll leave you to discover what the other two Hollows do for yourself. You will simply be locked out of the next wing until you’ve found the relevant Hollow needed for its puzzles. This means that you can’t actually see all of the DLC until you have unlocked all four Hollows in the main story. Each “wing” of the Void offers its own puzzles that largely use the Hollow associated with it, involving moving platforms and finding the correct sequence in order to unlock the way forward. The third game didn’t leave much room for them as it was more about the Soulslike risk/reward exploration and combat, and although the puzzles here aren’t too taxing, it’s still nice to have them back. Her name is Fury, after all.įirst off, it’s nice to see a few puzzles returning to Darksiders. She’s not happy about it, but Fury’s never happy. This time, the demon merchant Vulgrim has been exiled from the Void by an invading entity, and strikes a deal with Fury to turf out this new enemy in exchange for great rewards. They were used to travel quickly between locations, with magical stepping stones allowing War to move freely through the Void (conveniently disguising load times, rather than using loading screens). This second DLC however, Keepers of the Void, sees players returning to the Serpent Holes first seen in the original game. While I did enjoy the rewarding combat, I was always more interested in the exploration, lore and storytelling, so naturally The Crucible didn’t appeal to me. I didn’t bother playing the first DLC because it only added the wave-based arena of The Crucible, which was initially introduced in Darksiders II. That said, for a game that has so much story to tell, its DLC hasn’t exactly done anything to add to it. A series renowned for changing with each iteration, bringing that Soulslike style to the third adventure made for a challenging, yet rewarding, experience.
They do the same thing - send a packet to the DNS resolver. To illustrate the latter, consider these two snippets. It is possible to use connected sockets for ingress handling, and unconnected for egress. UDP clientĪs we'll learn today, these can be mixed. Traditionally the connected sockets were mostly used for outgoing flows, while unconnected for inbound "server" side connections. Connected sockets have a full 4-tuple associated. UDP sockets can be "connected" (or "established") or "unconnected". How do you "accept" connections on a UDP server? If you are using unconnected sockets, you generally don't.īut let's start with the basics. In this blog post we'll cover the basics: all you need to know about UDP servers to get started. We have a lot of generic UDP traffic going through our Spectrum service.Īlthough UDP is simple in principle, there is a lot of domain knowledge needed to run things at scale. We operate WARP - our Wireguard protocol based tunneling service - which uses UDP under the hood. QUIC is a new transport protocol based on UDP, it powers HTTP/3. Stateful UDP gains popularity for a number of reasons: Recently though, we started operating big scale stateful UDP services. We've spent significant effort optimizing traditional HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 servers running on top of TCP. Historically Cloudflare's core competency was operating an HTTP reverse proxy.
